AUCKLAND RACES.

MANY FINE FINISHES B\G HANDICAP TO TE MONANUI. AN IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE. STAR STRANGER WINS DERBY. (By Wire—-Special to News.) Auckland, Last Night. There was a good attendance and interesting racing for the third day of the Auckland races to-day. The weather was showery. Proceedings opened with 4he Ellersli'* Handicap, for which Mosaic was made favourite in a field of seventeen. Golden. Autumn, Miss Vera and Wendy were also fairly well supported. Golden Autumn and Nucleus piloted the field to the turn into the straight, where Mosaic, Miss Vera and Quincoma were handy. In a good finish Mosaic got up to win narrowly from Miss Vera, with Wendy third and Nucleus fourth. The winner is rather small but is a good sort. A FAVOURITE FAILS. Seatown was the favourite selection for the Midsummer Handicap, with Helen, Decoy Bird and Ngawati backed fairly well. Helen and Ngawati were close together in the lead entering the straight. Ngawati drew out at the distance to win nicely from Helen, with Seatown a good third. Decoy Bird was dose up fourth. PUBLIC WELL OUT. Lucullent was scratched for the New Year Hurdles, leaving eleven starters. King’s Guard was made a hot favourite, with Crown Coin. Black Cruiser, Askari and Sir Fanciful next in demand. Chirrup and King’s Guard led over the first fence, but Kendal soon took charge from Peter Amans and Prince Rufus. Crossing the top Peter Amans went to the front with Prince Rufus, King’s Guard, Kendal and Bright Light following in that Older. Peter Amans led at the last hurdle, but Prince Rufus, finishing well, got up to score narrowly. Bright Light finished well to get third. King’s Guard was fourthUowa Coin and Askari fell. TE MONANUPS FINE WIN. AH the acceptors started for the Auckland Racing Club Handicap. Count Cavwho looked extremely well, was a solid favourite, with Te Monanui Royal Divorce, Muraahi, The Banker. Star Ranger and Transformer all well backed. Surveyor was soon in front and led past the stand from Te Monanui, Royal Di voree, The Banker, Kamehameha and Count Cavour. There was little change in positions till crossing the top. where Cureaform and Star Ranger moved up behind the leader. Count Cat our was here in seventh position. Surveyor turned into the straight just *n front of Royal Present, Te Monanui. Transformer and Count Cavour. In a fine finish Te Monanui got up to win in fine »tyle from Transformer, with Conor Cavour, who finished well, a good third. Muraahi was fourth. The winner looked exceedingly well in the paddock, and gave an impressive performance. Mrs. Graham’s horse must be classed as one of.the best handicap performers in the Dominion. He won his race in convincing style, giving nothing a chance at the finish. The Ha-wera-trained Muraahi was also responsible for a good performance. He was last in the early stages, but made up Ills ground gradually. Coming in the straight with a good run on the outside he finished in fourth place under the judge’s box almost in line with Count Cavour. The outstanding horse, however, was Te Monanui. who looked the part and acted it. He will be hard to stop in his present form. GREAT FINISH IN DERBY. The Great Northern Derby was a fin - rare, with a particularly ••xciling finish. Star Stranger was a hot favourite, though solid support was furthcoming fur Mundane, bracketed with Ma-k. Ihe Thorn »ot a fair backing, a- did Star Area. From the barrier A her fv lay took charge and led past the stand from Maudane. Mask and The Thorn, with the favourite well back. This order wa • maintained m the six furlongs post, where Star Stranger ran up fourth alongside Mask. Entering the straight Mundane was just in front of The Thorn and Star Stranger. In a great finish fc-iiar Stranger got up to score a head victory from Mandane, with The Thorn third and Mask fourth.

ONLY HEADS BETWEEN THEM. The Newmarket Handicap attracted eight starters, Black Cat was bestbacked, but plenty of support was forthcoming for Oration, Glentruin and Finelli. Black Cat, Oration and Cawnpore were the first to show out, but Finelli soon ran to the front. Entering the straight Finelli led from Black Cat, Oration, Civility and Cawnpore. In a great race from the distance Cawnpore, Civility and Black Cat were together, Cawnpore getting the verdict by a head from Civility, with Black Cat a head away, just in front of Oration. The last-named wa-s greatly fancied as the second leg in the Taranaki double and made a good bid for victory. FAVOURITE SCORES WELL. The concluding event of the day, the . Glasgow Handicap, was won in fine style : by Fool’s Paradise. It was a great - betting race, with Fool’s Paradiso favourite and The Ijamb, Suu Up, Pelham and Uralia (-bracketed) well «up-por-ted. The Lamb, Mount Marta, Sun ! Up. Prince Abbey and Pelham were all prominent in the early stages. Sun Up was the first into the straight, with 1 Tall Timber, The Lamb, Mount Marta 1 and Prince Abbey all handy. The field ' was bunched at the distance, and in the last hundred yards Fool's Paradise drew J out to will nicely from Automne, with The Lamb a close ’third and Tall Timber fourth. THE RACING.
