(By ‘‘Moturoa.’’) Whangarei and Dunedin meetings open to-day. The Masterton spring meeting is set down for to-morrow and Saturday. An Auckland paper states that Ben Deeley is again riding work at Ellerslie. Trainer J. Morris took Oniahu through io Masterton yesterday. The horse is very well. Since last meeting the Kensington tracks have been greiitly improved, and should be in good order for the Whaugarei meeting, which opens to-day. _Adi Vunivolu and Nocturne promise to strip very fit at Whangarei. B. Rosen will ride them in their engagements. It was quite anticipated that Commendation would make amends at Hastings, and the dividend returned was a surprisingly good one. AV. 11. Jones will probably ride Far North, Sleepy Sol, Mosaic, Sunbar and Marble Mount at- Whangarei. AV. Rennie will be on Zircon and Comet King. Zircon is to be given a chance to distinguish himself over hurdles at Whangarei. He has plenty of pace, and his recent schooling efforts, have been very satisfactory. Barometer is sure to command a lot of attention in the Whangarei Cup. According to a northern writer an Indian sportsman is negotiating for the purchase of the horse. H. Lorigan is having a royal Innings with Eonmark in the south, and hopes to add further to his banking account at Dunedin, where Bachelor Gay appears to be the hardest to beat. Count Cavour is improving with every gallop, and his running in the Mosgiel Handicap, one and a. quarter miles, to-day will be watched with considerable interest. He wili be “apple pie” in November. Taranaki interests will be centred upon Rational at Whangarei, and the

crack sprinter is sure to run a good race even with 9.12. He will require to be at his best to pace it with Exactly (7.11) and Nocturne (7.1). H. Wiggins has a number of riding eil ga-gements at AVhangarei, including tlie mounts on Doleful Ditty, Exactly, liish Jig, Trill and Daddy’s Girl. »S. Walls will be on Lady Patience, and A. McCormac on Qi’incoma, Barometer, Quinoria, and -Bute Sound. The following horses have been nominated for the Waikato Hunt Club Cup, run at Te Rapa on Labour Day: Llew.ellyn, Birkenella, Kendal, Panchito, Kauri Park, Rafferty, Stonewall, Price, Woden, Ginger Carl, Lady Comet, First Call, Adrienne, Firescreen, Eruera, Birken Bose, Roller, Hypothesis, Koval Abbey. Hats Off. Several horses claim engagements at both AVaverley and Te Rapa this month, amongst the number being Price and Eruera. Apparently their owners are “fishing,” and will race their horses where treated best.

(Nigger Minstrel and Gold Light, the dead-heaters in the Eclipse Stakes (one mile) at AVanganui, will meet again in the Champion Plate (one mile and a, quarter) at Trentham this month. In addition, Runnymede, Musketoon, Rapine, and other smart horses will be in the field, and a great race is anticipated.
