CHILDREN IN HOSPITAL.

.... CASES WHICH DO NOT PROGRESS. TRANSFERENCE SUGGESTED. The question of transferring those children who are at present patients of the New Plymouth Hospital and are not making progress towards recovery to the King George V. Hospital at Rotorua, was discussed at the monthly meeting of the Taranaki Hospital Board held at New Plymouth yesterday. The discussion arose out of a circular which was received from the medical superintendent of the Rotorua. Hospital. It was decided to forward the letter to the medical superintendent of the New’ Plymouth Hospital (Dr. E. A. Walker) with the request that he provide the board with a report on the advisability of transferring the children to the Rotorua institution. The circular issued in regard to the facilities, provided in the institution for the treatment of crippled children was forwarded by the Department of Health. The circular stated that there were at the present time a certain number of beds at the hospital which might be utilised for the accommodation of any cases from the Taranaki district who may be suffering from the aftereffects of infantile paralysis. The essential advantages of treatment at King George V. Hospital were: (1) Adequate treatment; (2) an early decision given regarding the possibility or otherwise of satisfactory final improvement; (3) tne primary education of the children was not neglected while treatment was being given, as permanent school teachers were attached as members of the staff. The terms under which treatment was carried out were also indicated in the circular. “This matter concerns us to a certain extent,” said the chairman (Mr. M. Fraser). At present there were about half a dozen children m the New Plymouth Hospital who were not making satisfactory progress, and he considered that the board would do well to consider the proposals as set out in the circular.
