At Inglewood on Friday Miss Jemison, head teacher of the infant department of the Inglewood State school, was presented by the children with a dinner set, etc., to mark her approaching marriage, A vote of sympathy with Mr. T. H. H, Sinclair, of Opunake, in the death of his daughter, was passed at the monthly meeting of the Taranaki Hospital Board yesterday.
Another old identity of the Inglewood district, Mr. Alois Schriber. died yesterday morning at the age of 74 year* (u rites our Inglewood correspondent). For many years Mr. Schriber was farm* ing on the Lepper Road, but in recent years he lived a retired life in Inglewood.
The death occurred on Monday of the Venerable Archdeacon Arthur Towgobd, at the ripe age of 84 years. By his death there disappears a one time notable figure in the Anglican ministry of New Zealand. He was educated at Sherborne and Oxford, and after a year at Cuddeston was ordained at Exetef Cathedral in June, 1865, by the great Bishop Philpotts. Mr. Towgood’s health breaking down shortly afterwards, ho left for New Zealand in the Donna Anita, landing at Nelson in February, 1866. Returning to Nelson after a few months’ residence in the North he took duty in the neighbourhood for some eighteen months. After a couple of years in retirement Mr. Towgoou commenced work in the Rangitikei dia» trict in November, 1868. He was ths first English clergyman to settle in the district, where he remained till some fifteen years ago. He was made Archdeacon of Wanganui by the late Bishop Hadfield. The deceased was a man <4 marked literary ability and had a linf library, but fire destroyed his collection of books and the writings of a lifetime. For a number of years he had lived quietly in Wanganui.—Chronicle.
