THE MAGISTRATE’S COURT. FINED FOR ASSAULT. The nionitlily sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held at Waitara on Tuesday, Air. A. M. Alowlem, S.M., presiding. Ivie Thompson, who pleaded guilty to assaulting Henry Driscoll by striking him on the face with his fist, was fined £5. It was stated that Driscoll was doorkeeper at a ball held at Lepperton on June 10, and ’during supper-time, the defendant and two others were observed smoking in the body of the hall. Driscoll called out “No smoking, please,’’ and two of them retired to the ante-room, but Thompson at the door of the room met Driscoll and viciously struck him on the eye. Driscoll was dazed and retired to the ante-room, where defendant put him on the floor. Defendant alleged that after he struck Driscoll the latter assaulted him. BREACH OF STOCK ACT. David Hutchinson and Reginald Baker were charged separately with removing 38 head of cattle from an infected area without first obtaining permission from the inspector of stock to do so. Each defendant was lined £l, -with costs 7s. CHILDREN HOME FROM SCHOOL. Alary Paltridge and Herbert Edward Cudby, were each charged with failing to send their children to school on various ■specified dates. The magistrate held over his decision in each case for two months, saying that if the children went regularly to school in the meantime defendants would hear nothing more about the charge.

LICENSING CASES. Charged with being on licensed premises, namely, the Bridge Hotel, at a time when such premises were required by law to be closed. Alfred H. Lynch and Harry Kupe were fined £l, and ordered to pay costs amounting to 12s each. A charge against Pat Ward, barman at the Bridge Hotel, for supplying liquor during illegal hours, was dismissed. CLAIM FOR DAMAGES. A claim was made by G. N. Skelton against -J. L. Purdie for £63 19s 9d damages in connection'with a collision which had taken place near the toll-gate last October between a milk cart driven by an employee of defendant and a motorcar owned by plain'll! f. There was a counter-claim for £l3 14s. Judgment was given for plaintiff for £2l 9s 9d and costs amounting co £8 5s went with it. The counter-claim was disallowed. UNDEFENDED CIVIL OASES. JUDGMENT SUMMONSES. W W. Johnson was ordered to pay C. Dunbar the sum of £l3 14 s 6d forthwith, in default 13 days’ imprisonment, the order to* be suspended if tlie debt is extinguished by £1 per month. W. W. Johnson was ordered to pay W. F. McAllum the sum of £57 13s 3d forthwith, in default 28 days’ imprisonment, the order to be suspended if the amount is reduced by £1 per month to October II and thereafter £2 per month. Jacob Tame was ordered to pay M. Beckbessinger the sum of £8 18s 4d within 28 days or be imprisoned for eight days. Ngakawe Komone was ordered to pay Morey and Morris £l2 17s lid forthwith, in default 12 'days’ imprisonment, the order to be suspended if the debt* is paid oft' at the rate of £1 per week. GENERAL ITEMS. A meeting of the North Taranaki Card Association was held>on Saturday night, when the draw for the first round was made as follows: Lepperton v. Town, at Waitara; Tikorangi v. Freezing Works, at Tikorangi; Lepperton v. Tikorangi, at Lepperton; Town v. Works, at Waitara; Tikorangi v. Town, at. Tikorangi; Lepperton v. Works, at W'aitara. The competition starts on Friday. Farewell parties were held at the residences of Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Brassington for Mrs. .1. Fairley and family, who are leaving Waitara to take, up their residence in Dunedin. Mr. and Mrs. Fairley have been residing in Waitara for the past eighteen years and made many friends, who regret their departure. Mr. Fairley left a month ago for Dunedin, where he lias acquired a business.
