EGMONT RACES

WINTER SEASON OPENS « _ t THE STEEPLES TO TUKI IMPERIAL SPARK WINS HANDICAP The winter racing season was successfully inaugurated at Hawera yesterday, when the Egmont Racing Club’s winter meeting was opened. With the exception of a slight shower the weather was dull but fine, and there was a large attendance, with satisfactory totalisator investments. The Egmont Steeplechase attracted a field of eight, and was won by the New Plymouth owned Tuki. Another New Plymouth horse, Savoury, won the hurdles. The principal flat race, the Mcßae Memorial Handicap, was won by the Otaki owned Imperial Spark, whilst the Te Aroha trained Dan Quin won the Flying Handicap.

A LARGE ATTENDANCE.

SATISFACTORY “TOTE” RETURNS. „ WINNERS WELL CONCEALED. MISHAPS IN THE HACK STEEPLES. The Egmont Racing Chub has every reason to congratulate itself on the success that $c bended the opening day of its winter meeting, which usiiers in the steeplechase season. The weatner, though dull and threatening, was fine, there being only one or two light showers, lhere was a large attendance, the gale takings showing an increase over the first uay of last year. Racing throughout was of a very interesting character, fields being large and finishes close, whilst with the exception of the Flying Handicap, in which three horses, inciuoing the favourite, were left, the public hod no fault to find with Mr. G. O’Connor’s work at the barrier, whilst Mr. C. H. Washer in the judge’s box, though given some close finishes fo adjudicate, hoisted his numbers promptly and correctly. These finishes were a tribute to the work of the handicapper (Mr. H. Coyle), who not only brought the fields together but kept the public very busy all day, only one first favourite winning. For so early in the season the jumping in th© Egmont Steeplechase and Hurdles was good, but in the Hack Steeplechase it proved disappointing, only eight of the fourteen starters completing the course. Of the six that fell it was found necessary to destroy Active, which broke its leg, and Paraoa, which broke its * back. U. Mason and ’W. Easton, riders of Objection and Big Gun, who also fell, sustained broken collarbones and were removed to the hospital. M. Conway injured his shoul der, but he was able to ride later. Mr. A. Wilson (stipendiary steward) was present, but there was only one inquiry, that into the accident at the start of the Flying Handicap, whereby Rafa, Income and Avonlea were left, taking no part in the race. After hearing the evidence the trouble was deemed to be accidental. Mr. A. Morse had the course in splendid order, and some good times were recorded. The totalisator was under the control of Mr. W. O’Oallaghan, and speculation was fairly brisk. The sum of £20,810 was handled, as compared with £23,195 last year, a decrease of £2385. It must be remembered that on the first day last year there were eight races on the programme as compared with seven this year. » The Hawera Municipal Band, under Lieut. H. F. Aider ton-Fox, rendered an enjoyable programme of music, which was much appreciated, whilst the catering, etc., was of the usual high standard The secretary (Mr. V. B. Stratton) had : excellent arrangements made. The races will be concluded on Saturday. HOW THEY RAN. / SAVOURY WINS THE HURDLES. Loohson and Asleep were the only defections from the Hurdles, in which a big field of sixteen faced the barrier. Omahu wound up favourite, with Comcry Prince, Puwhero and Savoury also well supported. Bonny Rill, Glen Canny and All Wind were the only others seriously considered. After a little delay at the post the field was well despatched. Wee Sandy was quickest to show out from Savoury and. Taitaiata, with Omahu next, but when the field settled down Savoury was in front and led past the stand from Bonny Rill, Omahu and Wee Sandy, with Marble Glass and Puwhero next and Vagabond last. There was little alteration along the back, save that Omahu had improved his position and at the turn was running second to Savoury. The pair were almost on terms entering the straight, with Puwhero, Bonny Rill, Ota.uru Kid and Taitaiata close up. Once straightened up Savoury went on to win by a good two lengths from Omahu, with Taitaiata five lengths further back just clear of Puwhero, and Bonny Rill and Otauru Kid next. KING POT JUST WINS. A big field of twenty contested the Telegraph Handicap, Minstrel Boy being the only defection, H. Gray’s mount. Willow Wai, was made a hot order, with King Pot next in demand, the pair cArrvlQg half the machine. Attractive

and Empire Camp were best backed of the others. A good start saw s Lisogne nop out in the lead from King Pot, Willow Wai, Master Lucerne, Attractive and Royal Bonus. At the turn Lisogne and King Pot were together from Empire Camp and Master Lucerne, with Willow Wai, Royal Bonus and Attractive next. In the run home Willowy Wai put in a strong claim, but in a stirring struggle King Pot just managed to retain the advantage and win by a nose, with Master Lucerne a neck further back a head in front of Attractive. Lisogne was fifth, followed by Curraghmore and Empire Camp. A CHAPTER OF ACCIDENTS. The fdtirteen carded faced the barrier m the Hack Steeplechase, which provided. a chapter of accidents, six falling. Paraoa and Active had to be destroyed, whilst two jockeys, C. Mason and W. Easton, were removed to the hospital with broken collarbones. Bonibrook was installed favourite, with Sansalino the only other supported to any extent. Bonibrook led the way from barrier rise, with Hautawa Active and Uncle Dave next. The first jump proved fatal to Active, which brought down Objector. Entering the straight Uncle Dave had command from Sansalino, Hautawa and White Ranger, but the last-named came down at this jump. The first fence of the double proved fatal to Paraoa. Leaving the straight Uncle Dave was in command from Sansalino, with Karforte, Akbar, Hautawa and Bonibrook in that order. Half a mile from home Sansalino was on terms with Uncle Dave, Kaforte also lying handy. With one hurdle to negotiate Sansalino was in the van, but he ran down the hurdle, which brought him down, and the little-fancied Kaforte, going to the front, won nicely by over two lengths from Uncle Dave, which was eight lengths clear of Hautawa, with Akbar, Pouri Hoiho and Bonibrook following in that order. Big Gun also fell. TUKI WINS NICELY. Eight lined up for the Egmont Steeplechase, Sanforte and Puwhero being scratched. In a poor betting race Buckeye wound up favourite, carrying nearly two hundred more than Explorer, with Adrienne the next in demand. Tuki and Te Toa led over the first obstacle, but at the end of half a mile Explorer held the lead from Te Toa, Tuki, Blue Hall and Dick, with First Line last. This was the order along the back. After a mile Te Toa was just clear of Dick, Tuki and Explorer, with the field closing up. Dick and Explorer were first over the double jump from Tuki and Te Toa, with Blue Hall and Buckeye next. Entering on the last mile Tuki went to the front from Dick and Blue Hall, and was never headed, winning by a length from Dick, which had run into second place at the turn. Explorer was seven lengths away third and First Line fourth, followed by Buckeye, Adrienne and Te Toa. Blue Hall lost his rider just before turning for home. FAVOURITE LEFT AT POST. Ora’s Delight was the only defection from the Flying Handicap, leaving a good field of ten. The public made Rafa a hot order, with Lady Bentinek, Dan Quin and Pouma also solidly supported. The race was robbed of considerable interest. as the favourite, with Income and Avonlea, was left at the post, the trio taking no part in the race. Pouma was quickest to show out but was quickly displaced -by Lady Bentinek, with Dan Quin and Lively Fire close up and Pouma ahead of Mountain Bell and Archeen. There was little alteration along the back. Dan Quin turned for home with a slight advantage from Lady Bentinek with Lively Fire, Mountain Bell and Archeen close up. In the run home Archeen came fast, but just failed to reach the leader, who got the verdict by half a length, with Lady Bentinek a length further back. Mountain Bell was close up fourth, followed by Lipsol, and Pouma was last. HOT FAVOURITE BEATEN. The two bottom weights, Archeen and Muscari, were scratched for the Mcßae Handicap, leaving a field of seven, which the defection of Tame Fox, who was pulled out, reduced to six. A fine batting race ended in Hipo being established a hot order, carrying over four figures and nearly as much as Imperial Spark and Gold Jacket combined. Sunshot was the best backed of the others. A good start saw the field move off almost in line, with the exception of Cold Steel, who was slow to move. Passing the stand Valencia, Hipo and Sunshot were in line, with Imperial Spark and Gold Jacket handy. Leaving the straight j Valencia took command and at the aix | furlongs was three lengths clear of Sun- | shot and Hipo, with Gold Jacket next. At the four furlongs the gap had been

reduced to a length, with Sunshot second and Imperial Spark moving up, followed by Hipo and Gold Jacket. Turning for home Valencia still had a slight advantage from Sunshot, Hipo and Imperial Spark following. In the run home Imperial Spark joined, issue, and in a stirring finish got up on the post to snatch the victory by a nose, with Sunshot two lengths away third. Hipo was furth and Gold Jacket fifth. Gold Steel finished lame. EUPHONIUM WINS TAWHITI. .Ring Potoa was the only defection from the Tawhiti Handicap, and of the nine starters the public went very solidly for Rowley and Troilus, the former just carrying over four figures. Rehutai, Euphonium and Mountain Ore were the best backed of the others. From a good despatch Troilus was first to show out and led out of the straight from Euphonium and Rehutai. Entering the back stretch Rehutai held command from Euphonium, Troilus and Roosevate. At the six furlongs Rehutai was still in front from Roosevate, Mountain Ore, Euphonium and Troilus. Turning for home Rehutai and Roosevate were in the van from Troilus and Euphonium, with Rowley coming fast. A great finish ensued, necks separating Euphonium, Troilus, Rowley and Rehutai, as they flashed past the post in that order. THE RACING. RESULTS IN DETAIL.
