LAWN. TENNIS.

NEW CHALLENGERS. Though the grass courts are not yet ready for play, the lawn tennis tournament season has already opened on hard courts out of doors. Indeed, whenever the weather has permitted, players have i enjoyed the game throughout the winter in the open. All over the country there are. now hard courts in the public parks and recreation grounds, and these have been well patronised. But it will not be until the end of April that the game will fully revive. As an indication of the wonderful interest evinced in lawn tennis, it may be mentioned that every available seat for the championships at Wimbledon has already been booked. The other day Mlle. Lenglen sent a message from the South of France, where she has been playing regularly, that she had definitely decided to attempt to secure the championship which she relinquished last year owing to ill-health. It is reported ‘that she is playing as well as ever. Though none of the leading American players are expected at Wimbledon, a challenge is to come from a new quarter. The entries have been received by cable of four Australian ladies, who are not only to compete in the championship, but are setting out as a representative team to play international matches, not only in England, but on the Continent. We know nothing of Australian women’s lawn tennis, but it is not difficult to picture the type or game played. The ladies will not have watched Patterson and Anderson without appreciating the value of boldness ih hitting and in carrying the attack to the opposition. Indeed, one is prepared t.> see these Australian ladies just as aggressive, within the limit of their physical powers, as the men players of their country.
