BASE OF BIG FLEET.
THE SINGAPORE SCHEME. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Melbourne, May 12. “Unless a naval base is established at Singapore it will be necessary to establish a strong fleet of warships in service on the China station,” declared Admiral Guy Gaunt. “A base properly equipped for fuelling and overhauling capital ships would obviate the necessity for a powerful fleet. The base is primarily a good shop window; its main object is to show the British flag in these 'Waters as a business. Nevertheless in the event of an attack against Australia the enemy could not afford to leave a strong, base at Singapore in his rear and a submarine and torpedo squadron would prove effective in checking aggression.” Admiral Gaunt scouted the idea that the base would give offence to other nations.
