IMPROVING THE PORT.

JMPORTANT DEVELOPMENTS. NEW WHARF AND DEEPER WATER. BUSY YEAR AHEAD. That one of the most important years in ' the development of the port of New Plymouth was albout to be faced by the board, was intimated by Mr. CE. Bellringer in acknowledging his re* election as chairman at the annual meeting of the -board yesterday. Although the board had carried out a certain amount of work in the past great things were ahead, and he predicted a bright future for the pert. Several matters of vital importance, such as the construction of the new wharf and the dredging would have to be considered. Several difficulties no doubt would be met, but Mr. Bellringer was confident that these obstacles would be successfully overcome. One of the problems which would have to *be met was the question of carrying out the work of the board by contract or by the board’s own labour. At various times, continued Mr. Bellringer, much criticism had been levelled at the board, which was not in anyway objected to. although many of the suggestions put forward were impracticable. In conclusion, Mr. Bellringer thanked the other members of the board for the loyal support they had given him during the past years. The staff was imbued with the same spirit and they were always ready to carry out the works of the board to the very best advantage. Later, Mr. Bellringer commented on the working of vessels, and he expressed himself as being very pleased indeed with the prompt manner in which the duties were now being performed. The men had apparently realised that by the tactics they had recently adopted no good had come to them or to the port, and they seemed perfectly willing to carry on so long as they were not interfered with. The present conditions must be as gratifying to the men as it was to the board.
