HAWERA NEWS.

AFTER FIFTY YEARS. MAIN SCHOOL JUBILEE. (From Our Own Reporter.) Hawera, April 7. The jubilee of the Hawera Main School falls on May 13, and to promote a jubilee ceremony befitting the wonderful progress made by the school during the past fifty years, a representative meeting of citizens was held at the school to-night. The attendance was disappointing, only fourteen being present. The Mayor (Mr. L. A. Bone) presided. Proof of the ftate of the jubilee, in the shape of the original log book of the school, was submitted by Mr. T. W. Harding (chairman of the committee). An entry in this book stated that school was commenced in the school on May 13, 1875, by order of Mr. Middleton, chairman of the committee. Mr. Harding said it was hoped that the public would take the matter up themselves or join in an effort with the school committee, his reason being that the old committee would go out of office on May 4 and the new committee would not have much time to arrange the function before May 13. It was decided to celebrate the jubilee on or about May 13 by holding a social function. All present formed themselves Into a committee, with power to add, to further the object, call another meeting and go into details. A meeting of the committee was then held and Mrs. A. W. Page was appointed secretary. Mr. Harding was asked to go into the matter of issuing a booklet giving the history, etc., of the school, with illustrations. It was decided to invite the Minister for Education (Hon. Sir C. J. Parr), representatives of the Taranaki and Wanganui Education Boards and members of the Education Department. A function for the children will be held during the day and a gathering for the adults will take place at night. MEMORY OF ANZAC. SERVICES ON APRIL 25. The Anzae Day memorial services in Hawera on April 25 will be conducted on lines similar to those adopted last year according to 1 the arrangements made to-day by a meeting attended by the Mayor (Mr. L. A. Bone), the ministers of various churches, Captain Smith (Salvation Army), Messrs E. P. Cox and E. A. Gorton (U.S.A.), and Mr. H. C. A. Fox (Municipal Band). It was decided to hold the combined service in the Opera House at 11 a.m., when a religious service will be conducted. The address will be given by the Rev. R. E. Evans, and appropriate music will be played by the Municipal Band. It was also arranged to have an overflow service in the Soldiers’ Club. HAWERA PROHIBITION LEAGUE. The annual meeting of the Hawera Prohibition League was held in the Methodist Hall last night, about 26 members attending. A report of the year’s activities was submitted by Miss M. A. Bates and adopted. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follow: —President, Mr. L. A. Bone; vice-presidents, the Revs. Goring, Evans, Oxbrow, Greenwood and Captain Smith and Mrs. Reid; committee, Mesdames Goring, Curtis, Bone, T. Tait, Miss Williamson, Messrs Evan Evans, IF. C. Spratt, A. Hunter, F. Bates, J. Champion, H. B. Gibson, E. Taylor, W. Stewart and (subject to consent), A. E. Pacey, H. Taylor, S. E. Corrie, W. Gilbert, W. A. Spragg, E. K. Cameron on the area council, Messrs L. A. Bone, and H. Curran; league’s representatives F. C. Spratt and Miss Bates. A general discussion was indulged in concerning the annual no-license conference to be held in Hawera on April 22, when the speakers would include Mr. C. R. Ewmond, Dominion organiser, and Miss Burls, who has been touring New Zealand during the past six months, and other speakers from various parts of Taranaki.

Miss Constance Reilly, who has been a popular figure in musical circles in Hawera for some years, and who shortly leaves for London to continue her studies, was farewelled by a large gathering of her friends at the Savoy rooms to-night and given a handsome presentation as a mark of the esteem in which she is held by her friends and musical acquaintances.
