TRAIN DERAILED.

RUNS INTO A SLIP. WELLINGTON LINE BLOCKED. WIDESPREAD DAMAGE. ' HOUSES CARRIED AWAY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Dec. 20. At 5.30 a.m. to-day a goods train from Paekakariki ran into a slip near Ngaio and the whole train was derailed. All trains from the north detrained passengers at Johnsonville, whence they came by motor-buses. The mail trains for New' Plymouth and Napier were despatched at 9.30 a.m. via Wairarapa. Both Auckland expresses, 12.45 and 2 p.m., were cancelled, but the line is expected to be. clear to-morrow and traffic will resume. A very heavy slip on the Hutt Road caused a traffic block.

A very brier storm did considerable aggregate damage at Eastbourne, Rona Bay, and other parts of the East Har'bour district. The principal incidents were the carrying away of two small houses on a hillside- by landslides yesterday. No personal injuries are reported f but the roads were much damaged, exceeding £.500. The-.-new electric power lines were brought down by the washing out of a pole.

On Saturday night the mail train was again considerably delayed and did not reach New Plymouth until about ten'minutes to twelve. A special train from Wanganui arrived at a few minutes to seven and many travellers took advantage of this. NAPIER CUT OFF. ROAD AND RAILWAY SUPS. Dannevirke, Dec. 20. Traffic by rail and road north of Dannevirke is greatly dislocated today. The wash-out on the' railway between Matamau and Makotuku was still unnegctiable this morning and it depends upon the subsequent weather as to whether the uamage will necessitate the erection of a bridge. This mornings slow trains were cancelled and passengers for the north and south expresses have to tranship at the washout, which will result in unavoidable delay.

The main road to Napier is closed owing to extensive damage to the bridge near Matamau and other roads are also blocked by slips and damage to culverts. The weather is still wet.
