CHRISTMASTIDE IN BUSH AND TOWN.
’Tis Christmas tide in bush and town; So put your cares aside, For ill it is to fret and frown When it is Christmastide.
What’er we be, where’er we fare, By mountain, plain, or sea, There is a something in the air That bids us merry be.
Old friends rejoice, old tales are told, Renewed are old-time joys; Old men forget that they are old, And smile again, like boys.
A gift of wonder Christmas brings, A magic gift in truth— To youth it is a heart that sings, To age ’tis singing youth. With stars above, like golden flowers, And flowers, like stars, on earth, Let Christmas make this land of ours One happy family-hearth.
The bells ring out —rich bell on bell! The warm night air is stirred By their rich notes; once more they tell The tale the Shepherds heard. “Peace, peace on earth; be done with strife ’Twixt heart and heart,” they chime. “Forbear, forgive, and so let life Be one long Christmastime!” —Roderic Quinn, in the Sydney Mail.
