ANGLICAN CHURCH.
DIOCESE OF AUCKLAND. PROPOSAL FOR SUBDIVISION. The committee set up at the recent meeting of the Taranaki Archdeaconry Board to go into the question of ways • and means o’? supporting the proposal for the subdivision of trie Auckland diocese, has held two meetings, both at' Inglewood. On the first occasion a good deal of preliminary business was settled. including the appointment of a deputation to wait on the Taranaki Church trustees in connection with certain moneys held by them 'for the endowment of a Taranaki This deputation waited on the trustees and was cordially received. It was explained that one fund begun some years ago by Archdeacon Cole was subject to a deed of trust, and could not be touched without considerable difficulty, even if the archdeacon should be willing. A letter has been written to him on the subject. With regard to the other fund concerned, it was pointed out that if the General Synod gave the necessary direction and other parties were agreeable, the interest could be applied to the endowment of the suggested Wai-kato-Taranaki diocese. The committee, however, felt that an endeavour should bb made to obtain a sum of not less than £2OOO throughout the Taranaki archdeaconry as new money towards the present scheme. Later on a canvass will be undertaken to secure this amount. It appeared that there was a fairly general amount of support forthcoming.
In the meantime the two commissions set up by the Diocesan Synod at its recent session have held meetings in Auckland. Archdeacon Evans and Messrs. E. M. Lysons and S. W. Shaw attended as representatives from this archdeaconry. The committee referred to above consists of Rev. E. H. Strong (chairman), Rev. G. H. Gavin (secretary), Revs. F. G. Harvie, H. Lindsey, and Messrs. E. M. Lysons, W. H. Moyes, F. H. Brown, C. Stead, E. S. Rutherfiird and Marfell.
