Mr. E. Whittle returned from Auckland yesterday. Mr. Trevor Simpson, of the Auckland Herald staff, is spending the holidays in New Plymouth. Mr. J. Cpok, Commissioner of Crown Lands, returned to New Plymouth yesterday. Mr. Justice MacGregor, who has been presiding at the sessions of the Supreme Court in New Plymouth, will leave for Wellington this morning by the mail train.

Dr. B. M. Johns, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Jphns, of New Plymouth, has accepted a position as house surgeon at the Hamilton Hospital, and will take up his duties early in January. Messrs. S. W. Shaw and E. W. M. Lysons, who have been attending a meeting at Auckland of the committee set up in connection with the proposed new diocese, returned to Neiy Plymouth by the Rarawa yesterday. A Palmerston North telegram states that Mr. Matthews, Co'ntrdller-General of Prisons, who arrived on Thursday night from Wanganui on a visit of inspection of the local courthouse, was found dead in bed at his hotel yesterday morning. Apparently he passed away in his sleep. There will be no inquest..

At the official opening of the new Inglewood County offices yesterday a vote of sympathy was expressed with Hon. O. Samuel, first solicitor to the Moa Road Board, in his illness, and the hope was expressed that he would soon be restored to health.

The Vogeltown School broke up yesterday. Lollies .were distributed among the children, but there was no prize-giving and no formal ceremony.

The annual box-opening in connection with Dr. Barnardo’s Homes took place at the Fitzroy School this week. There are over 100 members of the league at the school, and their year’s • collection amounted to £26 Is 114 d as against £25 last year, showing that their commendable interest in a good cause has certainly not flagged. The largest individual amount (£1 3s lOJd) was collected by George Taylor (Standard 2) and the second largest by Phyllis Hancock (Primer 2), whose box contained 13s 9d. ' These ' two keen young helpers receive prizes. Eleven children, Eva Page, Joe Robinson, Rita Layman, Ron Shepherd, Queenie Worn, Jim Ifaskell, Ruby Wilson, Ruth Rea, D’Arcy, Plum-tree, Gwen Champion, Charlie Roberts—quality for silver badges this year, having collected not less than 5s for each of three successive years.

This evening at the Pukekura Park the New .Plymouth Caledonian Society’s Pipe Band will give an opem-air concert. This is the first appearance of the Band in concerts this season, and there should be a large .attendance of the public, as. the pipes .sound extremely well when played over the water. A silver coin collection .will be made in aid of thjj uniforms of the band.

The opening recital of the First Battalion Taranaki Regimental. Bamjl will be given in .Pukekura Park to-morrow .(Sunday) at 3 p.m. Amongst the. items, will be the Welsh national anthem with which the AH Blacks were greeted at the recent international match.
