HOLIDAY CAMPERS.

INTEREST IN TARANAKI. ALLOCATION Of GROUNDS. TOURIST LEAGUE’S EFFORTS. The monthly meeting of the executive of the New Plymouth Tourist and Expansion League was held last night. Present: Messrs C.* B. Webster (acting chairman), G. Fraser, G. Gibson, W. N. Stephenson, G. Kibby and E. L. Humphries (secretary). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs Skinner and E. Shaw.

In reply to a letter regarding camping grounds, the secretary stated that he had replied that Taranaki abounded with good camping grounds. There were rivers every few miles, where trout fishing and bathing could be obtained, and farmers were always willing to permit camping, providing- reasonable care was shown. Among other places mentioned were the Meeting of the Waters, the agricultural show ground, Ngamotu and Oakura beaches, sites at Warea, Okato, etc., and on Mt. Egmont. Letters were received from Mr. J. S. Fox, stating that he was prepared to allow campers on his property alongside the Kaihihi River, and he was sure that other settlers would do likewise. Some members were doubtful as to the advisability of permitting camping »n scenic reserves.

Mr. Kibby considered that an ideal camping site could be arranged close to the Meeting of the Waters, and it was resolved that the camping ground sub-committee be asked to report on the question.

Notification was received from the Ender-Secret ary of Internal Affairs to the effect that, in view of unforeseen circumstances, it had been found necessary to postpone the trio of the Government photographers to the district until early in the New Year.

Letters were received frem the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Tourist League in regard to the necessity for providing motor camps for tourists, which was becoming a popular form of holiday, and also the necessity for providing accommodation on Tongariro. A resolution was passed that the league noted with pleasure the activity of the New Zealand Tourist League, and would do everything possible to support its efforts. They particularly congratulated the league on the success of its efforts in exploration, resulting in the discovery of a new glow worm cave at Te Kurti. That must result in a still greater tourist traffic through the South Auckland province to Mokau, and thence ria the Awakino Gorge and Mt. Messenger to Mt. Egmont. Mr. Fraser reported on the visit of Mr. Wedderspoon, of the Tourist Department, stating that the latter was greatly charmed with Mt. Egmont and had promised them full publicity in the matter. The chairman’s action in arranging for Mr. Wedderspoon to visit Mt. Egmont was approved. Mr. Duckworth was added to the executive.
