FORGED A CHEQUE.

BANK CLERK’S CONFESSION. ARRESTED AFTER HONEYMOON. SUM OF £450 INVOLVED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. To be arrested on returning from his honeymoon for having forged and uttered a cheque for £450 was the experience of Harold Keith Jones, a young clerk employed at the Bank of New Zealand, Auckland. It was shown in evidence that the accused forged the signature of a depositor to a cheque for .£450, and on November 19 paid it into an account, which he opened at the Auckland Savings Bank, giving the name of Martin. Subsequently the cheque was sent to the Bank of New Zealand in the usual way, being duly honoured. Two days later £430 was withdrawn.

Jones, who is 23 years of age, obtained leave bn November 21 in order to get married, and returned to duty on December ItJ. He joined the bank in 1918 and was transferred from Wairoa, Hawke's Bay, to Auckland in December last. He was receiving £225 per annum. In a statement made to Senior-De-tective Hammond, who arrested him on Tuesday, the accused admitted having forged the signature and having paid the money into the account which he opened at the Auckland Savings Bank. When arrested a bank draft for £2OO was found on accused. He pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
