CALF-R EARING COMPETITIONS. THE CHAMPIONSHIPS DECIDED. (From Our Own Reporter.) Hawera, Dec. 18. Despite the heavy wind and rain today, the judging of the boys’ and girls’ clubs culf-rearing competitions in group I. and the championship for South Taranaki, was completed in the Jx»aii and Mercantile Agency’s saleyards at Hawera., when a fair number of people gathered and many excellent calves were submitted. The judges were Messrs. W. McL’Dowie, T. Jenkins and L. S. Barraclough (on condition) and Messrs. Wren Bros, and Air. F. Hoskin (on dairy type).

'When presenting the prizes for the judging in dairy type, Mr. R. Dunn said the winners of the championships should be very proud of beating all comers in South Taranaki. He was very pleased to observe that on the whole the quality of the calves entered was very much better than last year, and the beys and girls were to be complimented upon the manner in which they had presented their calves. It was a splendid thing for them to know how to rear a calf properly. He thanked the judges for their service in judging in various parts of the district, the representation of the Agricultural Department (Messrs. R. Syme and J. A. (Hasson) for their assistance, and the Loan and Mercantile Agency Company for the free use of their saleyards for the day’s work. Mr. Dunn urged the competitors to again compete next year and especially pointed out that they should not now drop out of the competitions, but should enter their calves as yearlings for the yearling competitions next year.

Although no prizes were provided in the schedule for the judging on dairy type, the adults present subscribeci handsome cash prizes to encourage the young people. Group 1., the only group judged today, consisted of the Mokoia, Tokaora, Tawhiti, Fraser Road, Ararata and Rawhitiroa districts. In the championships the Huinga district did exceptionally well, their success being the more meritorious on account of the fact that this is the first year they have entered the competitions. .. THE CHAMPIONSHIPS.

The judging for the South Taranaki calf-rearing championships resulted: Jersey-Ayrshire.— E. Putt (Huinga) ISO A points, 1, N. Wisnewski (Huinga) 176’4 points, 2; L. Gernhoefer (Rawhitiroa) 173 points, 3. Friesian.—M. Jones (Finnerty Road) 173 points, 1; B. Seed (Matapu) 170$ points, 2; M. Major (Rawhitiroa) ,167 1 /fc points, 3. The Jersey-Ayrshire champion was fed on new milk, whey and hay tea, at a total cost of 14s 4Ad. The record chart in this case was exceptionally good and was given 48 points out of 50. The Friesian champion was fed on new milk, whey and linseed, at a total cost of £1 3s 84d. and was born on August 10. The record chart was awarded 47 points out of 50, an excellent performance. JUDGING ON TYPE. M’hen judged on dairy type, the two classes gave the following results;

Friesians.—M. Major (Rawhitiroa) 172 A points, 1; A. Johnson (Tokaora), 138 points. 2; J. Johnson (Tokaora), 1'36 points. 3.

ST. MARY’S SCHOOL. The breaking-up ceremony in connection with the St. Mary’s School was held last night, when the children submitted a splendid entertainment, including the excellently portrayed musical play, •'Winsome in Toyland.” The following scripture prizes were presented by the ReV. Essay on Bishop Selwyn (Miss Lysaght’s prizes).—'Senior, Peggy Gilbert; junior, Monica Atkin. TAWHITI SCHOOL CONCERT. The end of the year concert of the Tawhiti School was held last night, when a large number of parents and fiiends of the pupils enjoyed a fine programme arranged for the most part by the children themselves. The concert netted about £4, which will be devoted to the purchase of sweets, etel. for the breaking-up ceremony to-morrow.
