WOMAN SHOT.
CHARGE AGAINST HUSBANfX ALLEGED ATTEMPTED MURDER COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. By Telegraph—Preas Association. Oamaru, Night. ’ At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, be* fore Mr. H. W. Bundle, John Holmes, aged 72, was charged with attempting to murder his wife (Annie Isabella Holmes) on November 2, by shooting. . Medical evidence. . showed that Mrs. Holmes was shot behind the lower jaW with a .12 calibre rifle, and- her condi* tion was for several weeks serious. Mrs.. Holmes, who is much younger than her husband; gave evidence that lier husband and she lived happily enough together, but latterly Holmet bad suspected infidelity on. her partf quite without justification. He had beea a bit queer, . but he had never threatened violence- to himself ..or her. H< complained of being unable to. sleep, told her some time . before the shooting that he had not slept, for weeks. They Slept in different rooms. She lm<f been able to'prove : absolutely, to Holme* that he was .wrong in his suspicion®, but that did not alter hi® attitude. H« Waft under delusion® witness could not shake.. , • ' . Holmes reserved his defence and wat committed for trial at the .sitting of t-ht Supreme Court to be held at Oamaru oi) February 4. The charge of attempted suicide preferred against .the aceuse/ was withdrawn by the police.
