WILL TOLL=GATES GO?
EFFECT OF MOTOR BILL. WILL CAUSE DOUBLE TAXATION. "AN UNFAIR PROVTSION." (From Our Own Reporter.) Hawera, Dec. I's. “That a letter be sent to tne Minister in charge of the Motor Vehicles Bill, pointing out the unfair provision which will be created by the coming into force of the Bill on January 1, unless all tollgates cease operation on December 31, as double taxation will result, and asking the Minister to make regulations to albolish all toll-gates as from December 31.”
Tliis resolution was passed by the Hawera Borough Council tonight on the motion of Cr. H. B. Burdekin, who said Hawera particularly would suffer, unless tollgates were abolished, by experiencing double taxation. They did not want this thing in the district, both from the ipoint of view of equity and of their •pockets.
Cr. E. Morrissey opposed the anotion on the grounds that tne Hawera County Council had laid out their expenditure in view of having toll-gate revenue until the end of March. He felt sure that toll-gates would be abolished at March 31.
