NO TENNIS ON SUNDAYS.

BOROUGH COUNCIL’S VIEWS. DISCUSSION AT HAWERA. BIG QUESTION OPENED UP. (From Our Own Reporter.) Hawera, Dec. 15. “f am against allowing King Edward Park Tennis Club to put anything on the park ground unless they give us some assurance that there will be no Sunday play,” said Cr. A. Reid \lhen the Borough Council to-night was asked by the Tennis Club to approve of the plans of the proposed pavilion at the park courts.

The Mayor (Mr. L. A. Bone) said he believed the club would do all it could to stop Sunday play. The members would be wise not to play on Sundays, or they might, lose the use of the grounds altogether. In any case, the court should have one day’s rest in the week, and that day should be Sunday.

Cr. J. G. Osborne: “Some say that that should be Friday.”

Cr. H. B. Burdekin: “And some say Saturday.”

“I would like to throw out the hint,” continued the Mayor, “that the club might jeopardise the rights of all players on the grounds by playing on Sundays.” The council should try to get some assurance from the club that it will do all in its power to stop Sunday play. It was only necessary to start tennis and then there would be bowling ami other games on Sunday, and they did not know how far it might affect the public conscience. The plans for the pavilion were approved without any condition. It was pointed out that the courts would be re-arranged to accommodate the pavilion.
