TONGAPORUTU (From Our Own Correspondent.) A plain and- fancy dress-bail was held in tne Tongaporutu Hall on December o in aid of funds for erecting a picket fence for the cemetery. There was a very large attendance of visitors from We.itara, Uruti, Awakino, Mokau and surrounding districts, and the ball was declared to be a decided success. The arrangements for the ball were in the hands the ladies’ cemetery improvement committee, who were assisted by a band of willing helpers. The decorations were greatly admired, and the fancy dresses were both pretty and becoming. Mr. A. Hu-tchins kindly donated two prizes for the best fancy dress, ladies’ and men, which were won by Miss Edna Waters (Eastern lady) and Mr. J. Rattenbury (Satan). The judges were Mrs. Gray and Nurse , Law, of Awakino, and their task was not 'an easy one. 1 understand the hall chib are arranging to make considerable improvement to the hall, including enlarging it by 20ft in length and also adding a large' supper room, etc., which will supply a long-felt want. The cemetery committee wish to convey their thanks to all who kindly heiped to 'make the •ball such a success. The folio-wing is a list of fancy dresses Mesdames Rattenbury (Eastern lady).
