THE HIGH SCHOOLS.

MEETING OF GOVERNORS END OF SCHOOL YEAR. EXAM! NAT lON CAN DID ATES.

The New Plymouth High Schools Board of Governors met last night. Present: Messrs H. R. Billing (chairman), S. G. Smith, M.F., L. A. Nolan, A. E. Washer and Dr. E. F. Fookee. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs L. C. Sladden, E. P. Webster, F. W. Atkinson, H. J. Eaves and. J. S. S. Medley. The attendance during the month had been very seriously affected by an epidemic of influenza and measles, reported the acting-principal of the girls’ school (Mie* F. E. Kershaw, M.A.), and in some cases girls had been unable to -sit tor examinations for which they had been preparing all the year. There were 29 entrants for the matriculation examination, one for completing a partial pass, and one for completing a medical preliminary examination. There were no entrants this year for the university scholarships. The parents' afternoon arranged for December 12 passed off successfully, and considering that there were counter attractions on the same afternoon, it was well attended. Applications for boarding for 1!)25 were coming in freely, and there were very few vacancies left. She would suggest that term boarders be given preference over weekly boarders.

Miss Kershaw said she could not conclude without thanking the board for acceding so readily to her requests during the year, and to the secretary of the board foi' his unfailing courtesy and helpfulness. It had been a very great privilege to be temporary head of such a school, and it was with the greatest regret that she now severad her connection with it.

Regarding the installation of hot baths at the boys’ school, the department notified that it was prepared to gra»t a subsidy of £ for £ up to £5O, in addition to the £lOO already granted. It was decided to obtain six seats for use in the grounds at the girls’ school as «oon as funds are available.
