PICNIC AND SPORTS.

NEW CONVENT SCHOOL SITE. EFFORTS TO RAISE FUNDS. A monster picnic and sports gathering was held at “Heidelberg,” the proposed site of the new New Plymouth Catholic School, on Saturday. The function was organised for the purpose of augmenting the funds for the new Convent School and to give the public an opportunity of inspecting the grounds. There was a large attendance of visitors, some of whom had come from as far as Eltham. and in spite of the boisterous weather conditions, a very enjoyable day was spent.

The grounds are about five acres in extent and are. fringed by the beautiful Mangotuku stream, which runs almost parallel with the South Road. The site is an ideal one for a school, and the visitors who inspected it on Saturday were very favourably impressed. During the morning sports were held for the benefit of the children, while in the afternoon, apart from the attractive maypole dancing, supervised by Mrs. A. Avery, and numerous •competitions, adult races were conducted. The many stalls, including those for refreshments, afternoon tea, fancy goods, ice creams and soft drinks, were well patronised, *»nd the financial result was most gratifying. Lady members of the various; committees formed for the big bazaar, to be held ia February next, were in charge.

The function was organised by Messrs. J. Courtney (secretary), G. Grace and J. Clarke, with the aid ofo a willing band of lady workers, whilst the athletic events were attended to in an efficient manner by Mr. J. Connell, starter; Messrs. T. Bartlett and Connell, handicappers, and Father Lynch, and Messrs. A. Dunlop, J. Dobson, J, JS.
