RESTRICTING IMMIGRATION.
THE -ACT TO CONTINUE.

In the House of Commons Mr. W. Scurr (Labouri moved the withdrawal of • the Alien Restriction Act, 1919, on the ground that the war was over and it would be absurd to allow the Home Secretary to keep out aliens.
The Home Secretary (Sir W. Jovn-son-Hk-ks) replied that it was not proposed to deal harshly with aliens or turn them out unlees convicted of a crime. Ninety per cent, were here before the war. However, it was not proposed to allow aliens to come here and seek work when a million Britons were unemployed. It was not intended to administer the Act strongly.
