RACING IN ENGLAND. JOCKEY'S NOTABLE FEAT. Received Dec. 14, 5.5 p.m. London, Dec. 13. F. Rees, the steeplechase jockey, won his hundredth race under national hunt rules this year, a feat no other jockey has ever approached. TURF TOPICSw (By “Moturoa.’’) ‘•Dug” Webster is taking a team of horses to the West Coast of the South Island again this year for the holiday meetings. The Emperor, who returned a big dividend in tiie Hurdles at Wbodvine on Wednesday, is owned by a drover, who picked the horse up cheaply. Rehutai ran pretty wen at Feilding, and should pay expenses M the holiday gatherings in thia provin'ce. Keep an eye on the grey! Anticipate has been taken up again. He has/had a long spell, subsequent to his breakdown when he won at Marton. Hopes are expressed that he will stand another preparation. When the Wellington Racing Club applied for dates for its autumn meeting the fact was overlooked that April 25 was Anzac Day. Now the -club is in a quandary, fyid is trying to. upset the arrangements of several minor clubs, but the latter refuse to be over-awed by the metropolitan body—-and quite right, too!

'Horseowners have made a very poor response for the 1000 sovs. offered for the Manawatu Cup, only a horses being nominated, and of these, one person nominated three. Sunart is the only horse of any class entered.

The editor of the Press states authoritatively that Count Cavour will not start in the Auckland Cup, though entered for that race, and very leniently treated with 6st 131 b. The colt’s mission, we are told, is the Great Northern Derby. Then why was he entered for the Cup? The Woodville track was very fast last week. Papaponga won over five furlongs in 60see; Koodoo, “six” in 1.13; West broke and Zaza, both backs, “six” in 1.14 2-5; Royal Divorce, “nine” in 1.55; Te Kuri, “ten” in 2.6 1-5; and a very moderate hurdler like The Emperor, a mile and a half over fences in 2.48. 4

•When our old acquaintance, Polthogue, ran a first and a second in steeplechases at Winton last week, he ran in the nomination of Mr. C. Christie, to whom he was given after the Grand National meeting. Polthogue is old enough to have a vote, but the handicapper took a ri«jk with him in poor company at Winton. A southern writer reports that Loughrea will not fulfil his Auckland Cup engagement, but will race iq the south during the holidays. Most people will agree with o'wner L. C. Hazlett that the gelding was flattered by being placed within 21‘bs of Gold Light at Auckland.
