MAJOR VON TEMSKV.

A picturesque figure of the Maori wars ia Taranaki was Major von Teinsky. He was the second son of Lieut. Gokmel von Temsky, a Prussian soldier, arid he entered the German Army. Being atrongbn imbued with a love of adventure he went abroad, , and after- many wanderings iu strange I gnis, be was eventually attracted to New Zealand. On the Waikato war breaking out in-July, 1863, he offered-his. services to the Government, and he was soon on active .service. He received promotion on the field for distinguished work. Major von Temsky’s sword rested till the break ing out of war in 1865. In November he took command of a company of Forest Rangers under orders for service at Patea, but he was eventually sent- to Waihi (South Taranaki!. He was present at the assault of Te Ngutu o te Manu, and fell nobly doing his duty before Ruaruru. He was one of the bravest of men oh this incident, in the Waikato War, ilhwtefttes* In company with Captain T. McDonneU he stole at night to Paparata, and hiding in Rie-flax all next day he watched the movements of some 500 natives and then reported the information. This is described a-; one of the most hazardous services rendered- during the war.
