SCHOOL FOOTBALL.

X ' FOURTH GRADE FINAL. A BRIGHT DISPLAY. WIN FOB HIGH SCHOOL. The final of the fourth grade championship between the New Plymouth High School third fifteen and Hawera Technical High School, played at New. Plymouth on Saturday, resulted in a win for High School by 16 points to 5. It proved a fitting prelude to the Moasear Cup match, both teams playing bright football and displaying a knowledge of the game that augurs well for the future* Though the ball was wet and the ground heavy the backs on both sides handled beautifully a nd gave a very attractive display. School giving the impression that on a dry day they would have put up a brilliant display. The Hawera forwards appeared to have the advantage in weight and height, and they dominated the scrums and the line outs, but in the ruck New Plymouth’s bunched rushes were a striking feature, proving very difficult to stop. The Hawera backs got most of the ball from the scrum and made good use of it, being very aggressive, but the defence of the local boys was very sound. After play in midfield for a while the New Plymouth forwards set up a solid rush that took them to the visitors’ twenty-five, where after a solid tussle Arnold crossed the line near the corner. Crawford kicked a beautiful goal. New Plymouth 5, Hawera 0. Hawera then attacked strongly, their backs throwing the ball about niceSy, but they could not penetrate the defence. Then Owen made a great opening, Bailey being collared by Collins close to the line. After a period of defence Penman led a solid forward rush to near half-way, where Glalbralth pickled up, and outpacing the opposition scored a fine try. Crawford failed to goa‘l: New Plymouth 8. Hawera nil. Again the New Plymouth forwards pressed, but the Hawera backs, securing from the scrum, attacked. Penny saving. Bailey was prominent on several occasions for Hawera, but finally the local forwards broke through, Arnold being collared by Cheevers, the Hawera full-back. Finally from a scrum Walshe, the Hawera half, sent the bald out, and after all the backs had handled perfectly, Bailey got over just as he was collared by Collins. Yates goaled. At halftime the scores were:— New Plymouth 8 Hawera 5 On resuming High School at once attacked and forced Hawera, who retaliated with a fine forward rush, but kicking too hard they let School force. Owen cut through and set his backs moving, but Bailey coulld not hold the ball. After a period of strenuous defence Galbraith was responsible for School again attacking. Both teams were playing an open game, Owen doing good work for the visitors, while Medley and Fookes were associated in a pretty bout. Then Fookes, beating the opposition Inside backs, sent the ball to Robertson, who was collared, but in ths resultant play the baill came across to Collins, who scored. Fookes just failed to goal: New Plymouth 11; Hawera 5. Undaunted, the Hawera forwards attacked, but Penny cleared and took play to halfway. where Riley snapped up from the loose. After a brilliant run he kicked over the fullback’s head, and following up fast, scored. Crawford'goaled: New Plymouth 16; Hawera Riley then sent Collins away, to be well collared bj' Bailey, and the Hawera pack, with a fine burst, carried pOay to midfield. A pretty bout between Fookes, Riley, and Medley had New Plymouth attacking, Hawera being forced. The Hawera backs then sent the ball out to Yates, who got going, but he was well collared. Thereafter the local boys had the better of rhe play, forcing Hawera a couple of times. Hawera then made strenuous efforts to score, their pack pressing hotly. Scores were obtained by Chard and Carter (2). THE LEAGUE GAME. AUCKLAND MATCHES. Auckland, Sept. 27. League matches to-day resulted—Marist 20 y. Devonport 17; Richmond 11 v. Ellerslie THE ASSOCIATION GAME. CHINESE DEFEAT MARLBOROUGH. Blenheim, Sept. 27. Before an attendance of some 3000 the Chinese "soccer” team registered the first win of their South Island tour against Marlborough. Heavy rain preceding the game made the ground greasy. After a keen contest the Chinese team won by one goal to nil. CUP FINALS. Wellington, Sept. 27. In the Chatham Cup final between Harbour Board (Auckland) and Seacliff (Otago), the game ended in a drew, one goal each. An extra quarter was played, and thi l Aucklanders, jumped into attack and managed to score two goals, the final score being: Harbour Board 3, Seacliff 1. The cup was presented to the northern team by the Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright). The Charity Cup final between Marist and Hospital resulted in a draw, two goals each. Marist led in the first half by two goals to one. The second spell provided an exciting struggle. Hospital gradually wore down the opposition. The veteran Fergusson played a splendid game and shot the second goal. No extra time was available and the game will be re-played next Saturday. PLAY AT AUCKLAND.
