HAWKE’S BAY CHAMPIONSHIPS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Napier, Last Night. In the final ot the Hawke’s Bay championship to-day Kapi Tareha (Napier) defeated J. B. Parker (Wellington), 2 up and 1 to play. NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB. A bogey match will be played at Walwakaiho to-day, provided there are ten competitors. Senior championship.—A. Smith defeated A. Bewley, 4 up and 2. NEWS AND NOTES' (By “'Stance.”) The New Plymouth Club’s championship games are now drawing near finality. In the junior, Anderson scored a rather unexpected win over Stokoe and now meets WorsJey in the semi-final, and as the latter is playing well at present an interesting game should result. McClune and Blennerhasset are now left in the lower half of the draw, and probably the former, who is playing very well at present, will prove too much for his opponent. Owing to Quin and Grey being away at the New Zealand championships the senior competition is a little behindhand, and two more matches have to he played in the second round. P. Grey was in good form in his match with J. B. Wilson, accounting for the younger player 6 up and 4. If Grey could only maintain this form the championship would be his.

A New Plymouth team journeyed to Waverley last Saturday and suffered defeat by the narrow margin of ?ne game, but nevertheless had a good outing, and were very hospitably treated by the local club. The surprise of the match was the unexpected return to form of Wybourne, who accounted for F. S. Johns by the big margin of 6 up ard 4. A match with Eltham on the local links during a week-end wou’d be very interesting, especially if the visiting team could include the amateur champion, L. Quin.

The annual match between TaranaK Wanganui i.- now only three we.*kf? off, and the fact that L. Quin will be meeting J. Goss again is lending addi- | tinnal interest to the fixture. There is jno doubt that this match will attrac. j visitors from all over the province, and ■ the game should be followed by a conI siderable gallery. I Summer will soon be coming on and 1 lie question of golf during this season is occupying the thoughts of many enthusiasts. ‘"Stance” would like to suggest that the first six and last four holes be kept open for play, and also that the mown portion be increased in v kith and extended nearly up to the t«*es. The reason for this is /hat many younger players and beginners are desirous of playing right through, and that the narrow fairway finds them engaged in endle.se searches, which soon damp their ardour and sends them off to seek other amusements. We have to consider these players as well as the “cracks.” who are always supposed to be able to stick to the straight and narrow path.
