NEW PLYMOUTH FIRES.
THIRTEEN LAST QUARTER. VALUE OF NEW ALARMS. Thirteen alarms of fire were received by the New Plymouth Fire Brigade during the past quarter, the members being called out on six occasions, the remaining seven calls being chimney and rubbish fires which were dealt with by members from the station, reported the brigade superintendent (Mr. A. Boon) to the New Plymouth Fire Board last night. Mr. F. E. Wilson (chairman) presided, other members of the board present at the meeting being Messrs W. C. Weston, J. Lobb and K. G. Archer. An apology for absence was received from Mr. E. J. Carr.
The greatest damage done was to a residence in Buller Street owned by Mr. Riding, the report continued. All the members of the family were absent at the time of the outbreak, with the result that the fire had a good hold before being discovered by passers-by. The attendance of firemen at practice and fires during the quarter had been satisfactory. and since the installation of the new alarm service in the homes of the members none had been absent on an alarm being given. One new member had been elected, and with two new auxiliary firemen the station was fully manned.
The matter of procuring instantaneous couplings was left in the hands of the superintendent to make further inquiries. Mr. Boon was also empowered to make further inquiries with regard to smoke helmets.
