DOMINION'S INDUSTRIES.

RECIPROCITY WITH AUSTRALIA. The hope that New Zealand was making progress in the development of it© manufacturing industries was expressed by Mr. O. C. Beale, of Sydney, on his arrival at Auckland from a trip to Canada. Mr. Beale, who was the first president of the Associated Chambers of Manufacturers of Australia, conferred with the Hon. W. D. Stewart on the occasion of his visit to Australia in connection with customs reciprocity. Mr. Beale stated yesterday that the manafacturers of Australia were keenly interested in the progress of the Dominion. and hoped that before long we would have established iron and steel works, which he considered were the base and strength of the nation. There was a genuine interest -in Australia, in the success of the mission of the New Zealand Minister for Customs, and complete sympathy, for such conferences were a very valuable means of fostering the inter-change of trade. They permitted the comparing of notes, and in hoping that New Zealand would find it possible to continue this means of reciprocity the Australian manufacturers did not insist that any agreements should be to the disadvantage of the Deminion, for they realised that such conferences could be only for the good or both countries.

(Referring to the proposed visit of the Prime Minister, Mr. W. F. Massey, to Australia, Mr. Beale said Mr. Massey would indeed get a princely welcome, for all Australia was keenly anxious to see New Zealand’s virik leader, who was not only the last of the great war Premiers, but was continuing successfully tJ guide this country out o* the diflictlties created by the war.
