SIR JOHN SALMOND. AN EMINENT JURIST. Sir John Salmond, a Judge of the Supreme Court of New Zealand, and one of the most eminent jurists in the Southern Hemisphere, suddenly expired of heart trouble in a private hospital in Wellington on Friday night. Sir John Salmond became ill a month ago, and had been confined to his bed for the past fortnight. He became seriously ill a week ago, and was ordered to a private hospital. The late Sir John Salmond was a son of Professor W. Salmond, of Otago University, and was born at North Shields, Northumberland, in 1862. He was educated at the Otago Boys’ High School, Otago University, and University College, London. He was admitted as a barrister of the Supreme Court of New Zealand in 1887, was Professor of Law in the University of Adelaide from 1897 to 1906, and Professor of Law in Victoria University College in 1906 and 1907. In 1907 he was appointed counsel to the Law Drafting Office, Wellington, and Solicitor-Gen-eral in 1910. He was knighted in 1918. Sir John Salmond was the author of many well-known law books, including “Essays in Jurisprudence and Legal History" (1901), "Jurisprudence" (1902), and “Law of Torts” (1907). Sir John Salmond represented New Zealand at the Disarmament Conference in Washington in 1921. In announcing the selection of the delegate to represent the Dominion, the Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. W. F. The funeral of Sir John Salmond took place this afternoon. A church service was conducted by Archdeacon Johnson at St. Paul’s pro-Cathedral who also officiated at the church, including practically all the prominent members of the Bar and all the Supreme Court Bench in Wellington. The Premier, Sir Joseph Ward and Sir Francis Bell were also present. The pall bearers included three K.C.’s. WANGANUI BAR’S TRIBUTE. Wanganui, Sept. 20. There was a large gathering of members of the Wanganui Law Society at the Supreme Court to-day to pay tribute to the memory of the late Sir John Salmond. Mr. Justice Reed paid an eloquent tribute to the debased, and said his passing was a great loss to the Dominion. He referred to Sir John 'Salmond a® a great jurist and his knowledge of international law as Solicitor-General was invaluable during the great war. Mr. Justice Reed also referred to the value of his book on Torts, which is recognised the world over. •Mr. .Lloyd, president of the local law society, also paid a fine tribute.
