The Daily Herald denies that Deputy Casalini’s murderer was a Communiat avenging the death of Signor Matteotti. It declares the Fascisti spread a false report as a pretext for renewed violence. Jimmy Murphy, in an attempt to overtake Phil Shafer, who was running a 150mile automobile race, ran off the track into a picket fence, where one of the picket© penetrated his lung. Murphy died on arrival at the hospital. IMPRISONMENT FOR STUDENT. London, Sept. 16. The student responsible fur the shooting at the Roumanian Legation on July 9 was oonvicted at tdiv Old Bailey on a charge of shooting with intent to do grievous bodily harm, sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment, and recommended for deportation. TAXATION IN AMERTOa New York, Sept. 16. According to the National Industrial Conference Board, the taxes raised in the United States in 1923 totalled £l5OO millions. This is £l5O millions above the figures for the preceding year. Taxation by the Federal State and local Governments has risen more than a billion dollars or £2OO millions during the past ten’ years.
