AWAKINO FATALITY.

DROWNING OF YOUNG MAN. DETAILS OF THE ACCIDENT. BODY NOT RECOVERED. The body of the young man Duncan Hepburn, who was drowned while attempting to ford the Awakino River on Thursday morning, had not been recovered up to late yesterday afternoon.

Further information received yesterday shows that Hepburn was engaged as a labourer in the district, and at the time of the fatality he was horseback, accompanied by his uncle, Mr. W. Hunt, who was also mounted. The water was found to be too deep for the horses to cross without swimming, as the tide was on the full and there was a considerable fresh in the river at the time.

Hepburn got into difficulties and dismounted. and Mr. Hunt, who could not swim, attempted to assist his nephew. He was not successful, however, and he was able to get out of the water cniy by keeping hold of his horse. Hepburn was swept away and extensive dragging of the river yesterday was nut successful in finding the bodv.
