FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE. GOVERNMENT READY TO ACT. In reply to representations by the Dominion Farmers’ Union the Minister for Agriculture (Hon. W. Nosworthy) states that the department ia watching very carefully the position in respect to foot-and-mouth 'disease in the United States, Great Bxitain, and elsewhere. It will not fail to» take more precautionary measures for the protection of the Dominion’s live stock. Regulations aoe in force prohibiting the importation .of cattle, sheep, ewine, and fodder from the United Kingdom. Also the destruction by burning of all hay, straw, or chaff packing material from Great Britain, Ireland. Europe or the United States is required, save when a sworn statement that the packing had been disinfested prior to use is produced. This must be countersigned by a responsible officer appointed by the High Commissioner. The invport of oats, barley, maize, hay, strafw, or chaff from the United States is prohibited. Additional regulations place an embargo on the importation, either directly or indirectly, from the United States of the following goods:—Tlants, fruit, and vegetables (other than cairned, pickled, pulped or bottled), grain and farm ptroduce, in addition to oats, etc., as already provided. Goods not produced or handled in California Oregon, and Washington otherwise than in course of transportation to New Zealand, however, are permitted to be imported is accompanied by a sworn statement made before an appointee of the Government i° the State, and eounttersigned by a representative of the Federal Department of Agriculture. This certificate must bear the name of the State in which the goods were grown, the fact tihat such State is and has been free frown foot-and-mouth disease, and that tihe goods under artification have not been handled or exposed directly in either of the three prohibited States. Similar provision, is made for hay and straw if they be grown in the States other than California, Oregon or Washington.
