EGMONT VILLAGE.

DEATH OF A PIONEER. (From a Correspondent.) There were many expressions of sincere regret among the residents of this district when it was known that one of its earliest and most popular former residents, Mrs. George Marsh, had passed away. Coming to Egmont Village as a girl of eight years with her parents in 1874. and occupying as a temporary residence what was then known as “The Blockhouse,” and which afterwards became the school teachers’ residence until replaced about twelve years ago by a more modern building, she had during her 48 years of residence here taken her full share of that portion of the pioneering work which usually falls to those who go out to the extreme edge of civilisation to make a home in the bush. In the seventies Egmont Village was a genuine backblock settlement, the country being entirely covered with heavy dense bush. Roads were then on tlie map only, rivers were unbridged, bullock drays were the principal means of locomotion, and the great majority of the conveniences and comforts which are available to the farmer of to-day had then no existence. After her marriage to Mr. Marsh, in 1882, she resided on the Upland Road, thence removing to the Egmont Road in 1895, and finally to New Plymouth in 1922. Her lovable disposition and willingness to assist at all times rendered her very popular, and after leaving the Village her presence was much missed. Great sympathy is expressed for Mr. Marsh and for his family in their sad loss. In addition to her mother, Mrs. Olson, and five brothers and two sisters, the late Mrs. Marsh leaves two sons—Mr. R. G. Marsh, of Stratford, and Mr. G. H. Marsh, of Egmont Village—and two daughters, Mrs. V. George, of Fitzroy, and Mrs. 11. Henderson, of Huinga, together with five grandchildren.
