“It’s only a sop to the city,” declared the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr. J. A. Flesher) on Thursday, when commenting on the -statement made by the Minister for Internal Affairs (the Hon. R. F. Bollard) that under the Motor Vehicles Bill the City of Christchurch, which now received £996 annually for registration of motors, would receive £l5OO annually by the retention of the 5s fee for drivers’ licenses (reports the Press). The simple fact of the matter,” added the Mayor, “is that the people of Christchurch are to suffer an additional taxation of £10,500 annually under tihe BiH, and of that amount £9OOO would go into the hands of the Highways Board for expenditure on roads beyond the city boundaries. The permission to the local authority to retain the annual license fees is now being held out by Mr. Bo Hard as a justification for the extraction of £9OOO annually from the same people. What the municipality says is that it should not have all the moneys taken from its people unless the local authority is allowed to share in the benefits of the Highways Act, which is not the case at present. The city people are bo -provide the money, and the outside roads are to receive the benefit.”
