COTTON GROWING.
BRITISH EMPIRE'S CROPS. CHALLENGE TO AMERICA DEMAND INCREASING. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received May 22, 8.50 p.m. New York, May 21. America’s cotton supremacy is being challenged by the British Empire, stated Mr. Bartlett (president of the New York Stock Exchange). He based the statement on the evidences he found in the exhibits at the British Empire Exhibition, adding that Australia, South Africa and the Soudan had greatly increased their cotton acreages, and the spinners in England were encouraging the movement, hoping thereby to be enabled to exchange finished products for raw material. Mr. Bartlett urged. America to act speedily to exterminate the boll weevil in order to meet competition. In concluding he said: “Despite the danger of losing our best customer, England, I found that cotton consumption on the Continent is increasing, notably in Germany, whose purchasing power is slightly growing.”
