CENTRAL SCHOOL

ROLL OVER SEVEN HUNDRED. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The Central School Committee met at New Plymouth last night. Present: Messrs S. G. Smith M.P., (chairman), H. E. Fookes, T. M. Avery, V. Elliott, Mrs. S. A. Jemison and Mr. F. Coleman (secretary).. The head master (Mr. D. P. Evans), reported for the past month as follows: —The attendance for the four week* ending February 29, 1924 was:— Admitted since commencement of year, boys 39, girls 40, total 79; left, not having attended this year, boys 58, girls 46, total 104; left during four months period, boys 7, girl* 3, total 10; present roll number, boys 377, girls 338. total 71'5; average attendance, boys 367.2, girl* 312.5, total 669.7; avers re weekly roll, boys 379.7, girls 336.7, total 716.5; percentage of attendance, 93.4 Recently Messrs W. E. Spencer, officer in charge of school buildings, and J. Caughley, Director of Education, vieited ih.' school to inqirre into the lack of accommodation and generally into the overcrowding conditions in the upper school, but to date no word had been received of the result of their deliberations.

To date books to the value of £B5 had bean purchased for the library. The H A. Stratford Memorial Cupboard was now practically filled and it- was necessary to provide an additional cupboard for one of the class rooms.

In connection with the New South Wales v. North Taranaki cricket match to-morrow and Thursday, it was suggested that morning school bo extended to 1 p.m. to enable the teachers to mark the registers for the morning and afternoon attendances.

A separate report of the expenses of the school excursion to Hawera showed that the receipts and expenditure for the trip would be about equal. The work of raising the memorial library by mean* of a base was left in the hand* of the secretary with power to act and the question of the arrangement of an additional cupboard was left to the chairman with power to act.

Hearty votes of thanks were accorded the Hawera Borough Council and the Hawera School Committee for the great assistance rendered on fhe occasion of the Central School excursion to Hawera.

Regarding the committee’* recent application for a subsidy of £62 5s in connection with the. new school library, the Taranaki Education Board wrote stating that the Department had approved of the subsidy and, on receipt of the accounts or receipts showing an expenditure of £129 10s on the subjects specified, the amount of the subsidy, plus the board’s contribution of £5, would be paid into the committee’s account.
