AUSTRALIAN MEAT.

RETALIATION BY GERMANY. By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. London, March 7. The view held in meat importing circles in London is that the real reason for Germany’* embargo on the importation of frezen meat from Australia is not due to rinderpest, as stated, but political motives, in the hope of inducing a relaxation of the Commonwealth restrictions regarding German products and nationals. Permits, however, were obtained for the Opawa and Whakatane to discharge shipments at Hamburg. An interesting sidelight on the possible future course of trade between the two countries i* furnished by the fact that inquiries are being conducted in London by a huge company, with headquarters in Germany, regarding the possibilities of obtaining supplies or commodities from Australia direct, instead of through British importers. It is understood that Baron von Eekhardstein is prominently associated with the company in which Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Italy and England are represented. It is known as the Eflia Company. It is stated that the company is prepared to take enormous quantities of produce from Australia, notably canned and dried fruits and meat, paying cash direct to the producer.
