A TOLERANT VIEW.

STATEMENT BY THEOLOGIANS By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. New York, March 6. A tolerant statement to-night by ten episcopal ministers of divergent theological opinions blew a breath of fretfh air into the over-heated fundamentalist controversy. The statement is the result of informal amicable discussion among the signers, who declare that the “fact* whereupon Christian faith is based have stood the test of centuries. Therefore we are the more ready to recognise the right of scholars to the widest freedom of thought and inquiry in the field of Biblical and theological research. This may be termed an evil, but it is less grave than foreclosing inquiry by invoking the method of authority. Faith is not a mere act of the intellect. Its value depends upon the extent to which it becomes the basis of our daily life. We believe that men whose minde move in divergent intellectual orbits yet feel between themselves the mighty centra] attraction of some divine power which bind* us all invincibly together.”
