Mr. Trevor Simpson, of the Auckland Herald staff, is spending a holiday in New Plymouth. A London mes&age reports the death of Lady Brand, wife of Admiral Sir Hubert' Brand, who is in command of the British fleet now on an Empire cruise.

Sir Alexander Muddiman, president of the Council of State, has been appointed a home member of the Viceroy’s council, succeeding Sir W. Hailey (states a Delhi cable).

The re-appointment of Sir Harold Beauchamp and Mr. J. H. Upton (Auckland) as Government directors of the Bank of New Zealand for the ensuing three year has been officially announced (says a Wellington telegram). At a meeting yesterday of the North Egmont Hostelry Committee, the chairman (Mr. T. C. List) and Mr. C. H. Burgess were granted leave of absence, and Mr. J. S. Connett was appointed deputy chairman.

Mr. S. J. Sutton submitted his resignation as councillor for the Urenui riding to yesterday’s meeting of the Clifton County Council. The resignation was accepted with regret, the council placing on record its hearty appreciation of Mr. Sutton’s services during his term of office. Cabinet has approved of the appointment of Mr. J. B. Mac Ewen as member, representing commercial interests, on the Dairy Export Control Board. The personnel of the board is now complete. The Education Department has confirmed the appointment of Mr. G. G. Hancox, M.A., B.Sc., as director of the Palmerston North Technical School, in succession to Mr. F. D. Opie, who recently resigned owing to ill-health. Mr. Hancox, who is • a graduate of Otago University and Canterbury University College, has for the past two years been a member of the teaching staff of the Palmerston North Boys’ High School.
