PROGRESS CONTINUES.

BUILDING ACTIVITY. WORKS IN NEW PLYMOUTH. RETURNS FGR NOVEMBER. The expansion of New Plymouth, as reflected in the building activity, is again demonstrated by the returns for the month of November, which were issued .by the chief inspector (Mr. R. Day) last night. The value of the permits for last month with a comparison with November last year, is: N ovember, 1923 £ 24,700 November; 1922 £14,000 Increase £10,700 Included in last month’s permits is tne new building for the Taranaki Daily News in Powderham Street, and other works include the premises for Messrs, .übby and Grey in Devon Street, and an oil store for Messrs. L. A- Nolan and Co. The building for Messrs. Kibby and Grey, which is being erected next to the New Zealand Insurance Co’s buildings in Devon Street, marks another in filling the gap in that portion of the main street. Mr. D. Barry’s block of shops, occupying the former vacant land on the west, is now taking shape, and after Messrs. Kibby and Grey’s building is completed it will only remain for the new opera house, for which plans are now being prepared, to complete an area of handsome structures. The growth of the suburbs is also shown in last month’s returns, for the permits include fifteen new houses. In November last year the number of permits for houses was thirteen, while the •\alue of the returns for that month was swelled by two shops in Liardet Street and two at Strandon.
