FIGHTING CANCER.

THE RADIUM APPEAL. RESPONSE IN SOUTH TARANAKI. (From Our Own Reporter.) Hawera, Nov. 30. A fair response is being made in South Taranaki to the appeal for funds to provide a radium department at the Wellington hospital, and it would appear that Taranaki’s quota of between £4OO and £5OO will be realised. It la the hope of those responsible for the initiation of t|je appeal to make a Christmas gift of sufficient funds to provide a fully-equipped radium department to sufferers of the dread disease of cancer throughout the Taranaki, Hawke’s Bay and Wellington provinces. While in Wellington during the past few days, Mr. F. Gillanders (chairman of the Hawera Hospital Board) made inquiries regarding the fees that would be charged for radium treatment. Mr. Gillanders states that he was informed that it would be necessary to keep two or three highly-qualifted radio experts at the hospital, and with other expenses a fee would necessarily have to be charged to patients. Patients would have to be recommended for treatment by the Hospital Board of their particular districts. The inability of patients to pay for treatment would probably not preclude their treatment, as, in genuine cases of hardship, the hospital boards would guarantee payment of the fees.
