BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ CLUB.

MANGOLD AND CARROT GROWING COMPETITION. *■■■ ■» > NORTHERN DIVISION. JUDGES' REPORT AND RESULTS We are indebted to Messrs. A. J. 'Olaason. of the Agricultural Division, r id R. G. Rediing, agricultural instructor under the Taranaki Education Tloard, for a copy of their report and . Idetailed results in connection with the irecent mangold and carrot growing coin* {petition. JUDGES’ REPORT. The results of the judging, which is uMt concluded, allow very satisfactory work for the season. Thirty school d.s- ■ Uriels were visited and 195 plots •weighed. This does not fully represent •the number which was applied for and 'fpr which material v«« s upplied. Naturally there were a good many tailures <ana partial failures, which was only to “be expected, especially considering the of the season. These, together with a further number of good plots which were allowed to be destroyed by stock, were not weighed, and in some School districts there were a few who 'failed fo use the material supplied. As will be seen by the results given below, ttbe heaviest yields this year are not equal to the best crops produced last y®ar, which is probably due t-c the exeossively wet season, but the average yields for each school district and ovei ali the districts collectively are much better than last year, which indicates a much higher standard of cultivation and a closer study of the written in- • cruet ions and also of the advice given by instructors at the schools during the season. In most cases, too, the school teachers have eviheed very keen interest in the work, which largely contributed to the success achieved The heaviest crop of mangolds is 92 tons 11 cwt., grown by Hazel Philips, of Mimi school, ana in the carrot cksa 62 tons 13 cwt., grown by Bernard Brophy, of Warea school, and the prize for the “Lest kept plot” is divided between Iris and Richard Marsh, of Mimi school. A few districts, including Waiters, Urenui, Tikorangi and Warea, are deserving of special mention for a large number of good plots, while,Mimi, with nine plots, put up the beat average In most districts during judging operations the local supervisors, members of school committees, and others turned out well and gave valuable assistance fey providing cars and other conveyances | for taking the competitors around to see the plots judged; this is an advantage educationally, and the pupils display very keen interest in seeing each other’s plots weighed out. DETAILED RESULTS.
