MATAPU. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The fortnightly euchre and dance held on Tuesday last was again well attended, all the tables being well filled. The evening’s play resulted in Mrs. W. A. Guy and Mr. D. Simpson winning the prizes. An enjoyable supper, provided by the committee and ladies, was followed by a dance, music for which was supplied by Mr. K. Sharp, and extras were given by Mrs. G. Harrison and W. Guy. A pleasant evening was spent in the supper room of the hall recently, the occasion being a smoke concert tendered to Mr. L. Preece prior to his marriage. Progressive euchre, musical items by Mr. K. Sharp, songs by Messrs. Jurd, Hardacre, Cole and G. Harrison, and recitations by Messrs. Petty, Guy, Hardacre, Cole and W. Hoskin made up an enjoyable programme. The guest of the evening was the recipient of a case of pipes from those present as a mark of the esteem in which he is held, and best wishes were expressed for his future welfare. Mr. Preece expressed his appreciation of the evening and the handsome present given him, and the many good wishes extended to him. The singing of "Auld Lang Syne” brought an enjoyable evening to a clow. Miss Franks, who filled the position of second assistant at the school for some time, has resigned owing to her approaching marriage. Prior to her departure she was presented by the pupils with useful presents in appreciation of the assistance that they had received from Miss Franks. Miss Surgenor is at present relieving, pending the arrival of Miss McHardie, who has been appointed to fill the position. DOUGLAS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Another successful euchre party and dance was held on May 31. A good crowd assembled in spite of the Inclemency of the weather. The prizes were carried off by Mrs. Wilmshurst and Mr. C. Wilmshurst. Owing to the cold snap this last month, the milk supply has rapidly decreased, necessitating the early close of the local factory. A few of the suppliers are separating and sending their cream to the main factory at Stratford. A flourishing industry, not affected by the weather, judging by the smoke issuing from the big chimney stack in our midst is being carried on In Emery and Co.’s brick yard. During the burning It is necessary for someone to be on duty throughout the night, and this is not a very enviable job during these cold wintry nights. Mr. Winwood, who for some little time past has been a resident in Douglas, having taken over the blacksmith's shop, has now been joined by his wife and family. The boxing enthusiasts, both young and old, met In his shop last week, where they spent an enjoyable hour or so. Some of the juniors shaped very well, especially Frank Latham and Albert Gichard. Public sympathy is felt with Mr. Rodgers, who has again been admitted to the public hospital at Stratford, where he has undergone an operation to his foot, which was severely Injured about two years ago. Miss Doris is still a patient of the same institution. An ex-pupil of the local school, in Jackson Brown, Is also a fellow sufferer, he having been admitted some time back. The roadmen are to be congratulated upon the excellent condition of the main roads. The Strathmore Saddle, which at one time was almost impassable in the winter months, mvst now be a joy for the travelling public between Douglas and Strathnure. Mr. Hopkirk, of Nelson, is at presen; a guest of Mr. and Mrs. Brcdow. Miss Walter, who has been spending a bonday In the Waikato, has now returned. Messrs. Worry and Tom Watson, of Douglas, accompanied by Mr. Dixon, of Walton, spent the week-end visiting old friends. TATARAIMAKA. (From Dur Own Correspondent.) The continued success of the fortnightly euchre parties in aid of the hall must be particulariv gratifying to the promoters. The function held on Friday last, in spite of wet weather and counter attractions, was well patronised. Amongst those present was a large contingent from Oakura. Miss Honeyfield (New Plymouth), Miss McGonell and Miss Gatenby, with ten games, tied for the ladies’ prize. In the play-off Miss Honeyfield proved the winner. Mr. and . G Bell both scored eleven games. The latter gentleman won the gentlemen’s prizes at the two previous euchre parties, and we wer*. all beginning to think him Invincible, so the ex- ! citement ran high In the play-oH, and. after a very even game, Mr. Turcbl beat his opponent by one point. Mr. Rex Honeyß-ld ably carried out the dutle. ot M.C. for the dance, which followed, and the ladles, as usual, provided the supper. ..
