DISTRICT COOTENTION. The District Convention was held in the Presbyterian Hall, Hawera, on Wednesday and Thursday, June 6 and 7. A public meeting was held on Wednesday evening, and a hearty welcome extended to the delegates and visitors by the Mayor (Mr. Bone) Mrs. Phillips, Stratford, ’ (District president) was in the chair. During the evening Mrs. Duxfield, of Wanganui, gave an interesting demonstrating of L.T.L. work, which was greatly appreciated. Mrs. Peryman, editor of the White Ribbon, was the chief speaker of the evening, giving an eloquent address on Law-makers and Law-breakers. On Thursday, resolutions were passed urging the Minister of Health to provide a. home for borderland and mental cases requiring special treatment, and also to the Minister of Railways, petitioning that suitable provision be made or the trains when such patients have to travel. Mrs. Peryman addressed the delegates on the benefit of. “Counting our advantages instead of our failures.’ Mrs. Phillips, in her presidential address, urged the need for training children in moral, physical and spiritual affairs. ..... j Two new members were initiated. Five members competed for the one minute impromptu speeches, the first prize going to Mrs. Young, Hawera, and second to Mrs. Birkett, Eltham. ■Mrs. ■'Strange, of Hawera acted as judge. The election of • officers resulted as follows: —President, Mrs. Duzfield; (cor. sec.), Mrs. X. Jones; (rec. sec.), Mrs. Jamison; (treasurer), Mrs. Hawkins. Morning and afternoon tea was kmcily served by the members of the Hawera Union.
