TARANAKI WAR FUNDS.

PROPOSED DISBURSEMENT. The funds of the Taranaki War Relief - Association now amount to £9OOO, which, if the present permanently-dis-abled soldiers’ scheme is adhered to, would be absorbed by the applications now in hand. Applicants with 40 per cent, or greater disability could be paid in full, but there would be a pro rata reduction in payments to applicants with lesser disability. The National War Funds Council has previously ob jected to the whole of the funds being used, on the grounds that the association should hold some amount to meet the demands of necessitous cases arising from time to time. The association proposed to the council that £3OOO be transferred to a separate fund for necessitous cases ineligible under permanently-disabled soldiers’ scheme, and that the balance be disbursed under the permanently - disabled soldiers’ .scheme to applicants with over 40 pe? cent, disability. A pro rata reduction of approximately one-third in the amount paid would be necessary. In February, Mr. W. P. Kirkwood, chairman of the Taranaki association, made representations to the Minister in support of the proposal, and again while in Wellington recently he interviewed the secretary to the council. He has now received a reply to the effect that the Minister was absent from the city, but that as soon as he returned the matter would again be placed before him and a definite reply forwarded as soon as possible.
