KNOCKED DOWN BY TRAM. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, April 28. An elderly married woman, Mary Stanley, was knocked down by a tramcar at Ep- | Bom. The swift application of the brakes saved her life. She was removed to the hospital in a semi-conscious condition and her state is still serious. TAXI AND TRAMCAR COLLIDE. Christchurch, April 28. Three men were admitted to hospital last night as a result of a head-on collision between a taxi and a tramcar on the Papanui Road. Their names are Francis McTigue (driver), J. Garrett and William Derm.tt. The fourth man, a passenger, escaped uninjured. Dermott received head injuries, and was unconscious when admitted to the hospital, but the condition of all three is reported as satisfactory to-day. The tramway motorman states that he saw the mo-tor-car coming towards him, and sounded the gong. When he saw the taxi was not changing its direction he began to slow down, the tram being practically at a stand still at the time of the impact. The motorist was on his proper side of the road, but the tram was running on a single line on the wrong side. BOY DROWNED IN LAKE. Waipukurau, April 28. A boy named Samuel Haldane, aged 18, a visitor from Hastings, was drowned in the Waipukurau Lake yesterday. He went out alone in the morning in a boat to make preparations for duck-shooting, and . has not since been seen. The body has not been recovered.
