THE NEW SEISMOGRAPH.

REMARKABLE RECORD SECURED.

By Telegraph.—Press Association.

Wellington, Feb. 5.

The Government seismologist, Dr. Adams, recently erected the new Milne Shaw seismograph on a temporary mounting at Victoria .College. It secured a remarkable record of the big earthquake reported by cable. The first waves arrived about 5 p.m. on Friday and the record extends for three hours. The maximum amplitude of the earth movement here was about two-thirds of a millimetre (about a fortieth of an inch). The record indicates that the origin was approximately 5500 miles away.
