ASHORE IN A STORM.
LOSS OF THE KETCH EDNA. THICK WEATHER AT THE TIME. TOTAL LOS'S EXPECTED, By Telegraph.—Press Assoc:ation. Auckland, Last Night. Details of the loss of the ketch Edna at Parenga Heads show that a northeast storm with heavy rain squalls raised a considerable sea, and in thick and dirty weather no land could be seen. Sliortl.y before 11 a.m. breakers were sighted" a short distance to leeward. The vessel was under reduced sail, more being set to try to beat to sea, but the vessel drifted on to a sandspit. Captain Burke and his two mon, after landing, remained near at hand in the hope of salvage, spending the night in scrub, but the storm prevented any action. During the night the Edna slipped off the sandspit on an ebbing tide, sinking in six fathoms. The Edna is considered a total loss ( and it is doubtful if the cargo of gelignite can be recovered.
